cf3 Pop-up visit to Grailville this Saturday, June 11 from 10am to 12pm. Terrie Puckett, Grailville Director, and Joe Schickel, a Schickel family member, will join for our tour and will speak about the history of The Grail, the c. 1962 William Schickel-designed Oratory, the c. 1961 Dick Tweddell-designed Dining Hall. Additionally we will visit the Robert Wilson environmental sculpture on the property.
Oratory
Dedicated to worship, meditation, weddings and other ceremonies, Grailville’s award-winning Oratory is a beautiful, sacred space. Holding up to 250 people, the Oratory was a dairy barn built in 1813 and converted in 1962 by William Schickel, a renowned artist and the spouse of Grail member, Mary Schickel.
History
Founded by a Jesuit priest, Jacques van Ginneken, in Holland in 1921, The Grail began as a Catholic lay organization, called The Women of Nazareth.
In May 1940 at the invitation of Chicago’s archbishop, two Dutch Grail women, Lydwine van Kersbergen and Joan Overboss came to the United States to establish
The Grail at Doddridge Farm, a summer camp in Libertyville, Illinois. In 1944, the moved to a farm in Loveland, Ohio (near Cincinnati). This farm is now Grailville.
The Grail placed women’s work on the land at the center of its vision from its founding. Over the years the programs of the women-centric organization has changed its programs and focus but has remained true its vision of female spirituality theology, education and service in the Catholic Christian tradition.
