cf3 coffee chat: Teller House (1968, Carl Strauss)

The Teller house was built in 1968 for Jerome (now deceased) and Suzanne Teller, both of whom were children of Russian immigrants. Jerome was born in Kansas City, the son of a tailor. He eventually made his way to Cincinnati, where he attended UC; Suzanne is a Cincinnati native who grew up in Bond Hill, attended Northwestern University and was active in Wise Temple. The couple met in Walnut Hills High School, married in Jerome’s last year of law school, and raised three children. Jerome was a partner inthe firm of Katz, Teller, Brandt & Hild. The couple were avid volunteers and civic leaders and strongsupporters of Jewish organizations in Cincinnati, including an immigrant aid society and refugee resettlement organization.

The Tellers intended to live in the Winding Way home for the rest of their lives, which was true of Jerome; Suzanne sold the house to new owners just last year and went to live with her son because of deteriorating health.

Designed by architect Carl Strauss, the Teller House is an excellent example of the “soft Modernism” for which the architect was known, using natural materials, such as vertical wood siding, that blend into the suburban landscape rather than standing apart from it.
