Modern for Its Time: The Imperial Theater-Mohawk Performing Arts Center
Built in 1912 in the village of Mohawk, the Imperial Theater was considered modern for its time. It’s a wonderful example of two overlapping architectural periods: Art Deco and Art Moderne. Originally it housed vaudeville shows for Cincinnati audiences, later in the 1920’s and 30’s, it was renovated for motion pictures with an Art Moderne lobby and Deco lighting in the theater.
After its long run as a movie theater, the 1970’s brought several iterations of businesses there. Then after years of non-use, Julie Fay had a vision for restoring and adding to the theater to serve as a nonprofit performing arts space to anchor the neighborhood that we know as part of Over the Rhine.
