Humanizing the Landscape: Outdoor/Indoor Tour
When Sara and Joel bought their home 26 years ago, it was surrounded by tall oak trees, traditional mown lawn grass, 6-foot yews, and entanglements of invasive shrubs and vines. The concrete mid-century Cliff May house, built in 1952, was designed as a California ranch intended to mingle the indoor spaces with the landscape.
Recognizing what was needed was an eco-restoration and a landscape of a more human scale; to bring the house and the environment together. They got to work.
What is transpiring now is a labor of love (actual labor) and vision. By slowly replacing invasive plants with native ones and thoughtfully placing boulders and pieces of art, they are encouraging a dialogue between the house, humans, and land. Additional aspects include the restoration of the original backyard fountain pool and softening and enlivening the (previously mown) outer areas with native pollinator plants and grasses. Join us this Saturday for an outdoor/indoor tour to hear and see the challenges and victories of this ambitious endeavor.
